H Bales, Ipswich
With 1 ½ inch turn off barrels of 44 bore engraved at the muzzles, round actions engraved with stands of arms and ‘BALES’ on the left side and ‘Ipswich’ on the right, throat hole cocks, double rollers on the frizzens, top mounted engraved sliding safeties engaging both cock and frizzen, hidden triggers surrounded by foliate engraving, chequered walnut butts with vacant diamond shaped escutcheons, silver lion’s head butt caps, Birmingham proof marks.
Henry J. Bales (1781-1835) worked for Forsyth & Co. in London from c. 1808 before setting up on his own account at 2 Upper James St., Golden Square in 1811. Moved to Cornill, Ipswich 1814-1830.
