Each pistol with 10 inch rebrowned octagonal scratch rifled sighted barrel with gold inlaid maker’s stamp on the top flat of the patent recessed breech which has a single gold line and gold touch hole, finely engraved tang incorporating the rear sight, flat locks with acanthus leaf border engraving signed JOSEPH MANTON • LONDON, cocks engraved with foliage (one an expert replacement), roller frizzen bearing on a ramp on the blued feather spring, engraved safety bolts, rainproof pan, figured walnut half stock with finely chequered rounded butt, horn fore end cap, silver barrel bolt escutcheons and wrist escutcheon engraved with owner’s crest of a horn supported by two feathers, blued iron furniture including butt cap engraved with a border, foliage and trophies echoed on the trigger guard bow, trigger plate with pineapple finial, original mahogany case lined in green baize with accessories including a fine red leather covered three way powder flask, loading mallet with powder measure, cleaning rod, ball mould and “dog bone” double turn screw, the interior of the lid with maker’s trade label, the exterior with recessed brass circular carrying handle surrounding an escutcheon bearing the owner’s initials ‘WB’ in script.
