A 9 bore Bank Gun of Exceptional Length

Ref: 497

Price: £5,500

Maker: Allen

Date: circa 1765

With 70 inch three stage barrel, tang with sighting groove, curved lock signed R. Allen, walnut full stock with carved apron around the barrel tang (some age related cracks and minor repairs), brass mounts including engraved side plate, butt plate with engraved tang, trigger guard with engraved floral finial.

Note: Guns of this type were used by resting the long barrel on the bank of a lake or river to shoot at sitting wildfowl. There was a theory that barrel length was related to range and accuracy but punt guns with heavier loads were more successful commercially.
